Starting September 1st, Madison business owners can begin renewing their City of Madison business license. If you run a business inside city limits, this is your reminder to get it on your calendar, and this year, Madison Mompreneur is doing something we haven’t done before: we’re offering grants to help cover part of that expense for our members.

What You Need to Know About Renewing

A business license is required for both commercial and residential/home-based businesses operating in the City of Madison. Here’s the process, based on what we’ve learned going through it ourselves:

• Renew online through the City of Madison’s Revenue Department, or in person at the Revenue Office, located at 100 Hughes Rd, Madison, AL — the office is tucked to the left side of the building, so don’t be afraid to ask if you’re having trouble finding it.
• Watch your mail. The city typically sends renewal notices with a list of any documents specific to your business. If your notice doesn’t list special requirements, a quick call to the licensing department (256-772-5654) will get you pointed in the right direction.
• Check if you need more than one license. Because Madison spans both Madison and Limestone counties, some businesses may need to renew licenses in more than one place depending on where you’re physically located. If you’re not sure which applies to you, the Revenue Department can tell you.

New This Year: Madison Mompreneur Is Offering Grants to Help Cover the Cost of Madison Business Licenses

We know license renewal is just one more thing on an already full plate, and we know the cost adds up alongside everything else you’re managing as a mom running a business. So this year, Madison Mompreneur is setting aside grant funding to help our members offset a portion of their business license renewal expense.

This is one of the first tangible steps toward the microgrant vision we’ve talked about since day one, using what we’re building here to actually put money back into the hands of the moms in this community. We’re proud to be able to offer it, even in this first, smaller form.

A few things to know up front:

• This grant is available to Madison Mompreneur members only.
• Funding will cover a portion of your license renewal cost, up to the amount our grant pool allows this cycle.
• Grants will be distributed by the end of the month.

How to Apply – Grant Requirements & Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria

• Open to current Madison Mompreneur members
• Member must operate a business located in (or licensed through) the City of Madison
• Grant covers the cost of the City of Madison business license fee only

Application Deadline

• All applications must be submitted by October 15, 2026

Required Documentation

• Member’s full name
• Business name
• Copy of the receipt showing payment of the 2026 business license fee

Award Determination / Prioritization

If applications exceed available grant funds, awards will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis, in the order applications are received

How to Submit Your Receipt

Once you’ve renewed and paid your business license:

1. Save your receipt or proof of payment.
2. Submit it to us by email madisonmompreneur@gmail.com by October 15, 2026. Include
3. Grants will be reviewed and distributed by the end of October.

That’s it — no complicated forms, just proof that you took care of business (literally).
